Making the Most of Rome, Italy

Colosseum

I think we left part of our hearts in Rome. We kind of went in not expecting to love the big city. But Rome is so different, especially old town Rome, which is where you want to be anyways.

We stayed in an AirBnB, very close to the Pantheon.  Just outside was a Piazza and we would watch it go from a farmers market in the morning to restaurants at night. There was always something to watch in our little Piazza. It just made the whole experience that much more charming.

Amsterdam

Dancing House Amsterdam

Dancing House Amsterdam

The biggest reason we chose to go to Amsterdam was the direct flight from Portland, OR to Amsterdam. Once you are in Amsterdam you must look around, right?

Here are a few things you need to know about Amsterdam if you are maybe uneasy about traveling to a foreign country. [Read more…]

Berlin

Sunset over Germany

Sunset over Germany

Berlin is one huge city, but at the same time not so huge. Hard to explain. We rode the ungrounded a lot because the U2 was right out the door of our hotel, but we also realized what was 2 underground stops away was just under a mile away. It really felt like you were going to much farther.

We bought the ABC pass for 5 days and it was unlimited and could be used for buses, trams, trains and underground. If Berlin has it, it’s included. Don’t use the sightseeing buses, use public transportation.

My tip within a tip: [Read more…]

Zion National Park

Beautiful Zion National Park

Beautiful Zion National Park

It feels like it’s been a while since we have gotten away on vacation, so this one was much appreciated. Not only because of where we were, but because Portland got hammered with rain while we were gone and I got a sun burn. Always makes for a perfect vacation, don’t you think?

From Portland we flew into Las Vegas. Not being huge Vegas fans we planned something outside of town that was more fun than throwing down money. We drove some exotic cars. After a day of that we were off on our 2 hour drive to St. George, Utah, which is about 45 minutes away from Zion. We could have gotten closer, but my brother had a connection for a house in St. George, so we took advantage of that. [Read more…]

Our Favorite Trips of 2014

This year took us on roads we had never been down before.

This year took us on roads we had never been down before.

This year brought lots of changes for us. Our youngest child graduated and left home leaving us as Empty Nesters. Having the desire to travel more and the freedom (sorry kids those sport schedules were tough to work around) we decided to try more weekend vacations. Before he graduated though we did a trip that was many years in the planning. Germany! [Read more…]

Things To Do in Phoenix

Hike to a peak and take in the city from afar

Hike to a peak and take in the city from afar

Our travels are becoming more frequent because we are empty nesters. Our travels also take us to where our kids are and that allows us to experience where they are living. Taking a weekend to get away from from the cold and rain in Portland to sunny Phoenix is a no brainer. We couldn’t wait to ditch our raincoats for shorts. My daughter had lined up a few restaurants to try and some fun things to do right in Phoenix. I planned a day in Sedona hiking and playing. It was all set to be the perfect weekend. [Read more…]

Hiking in Central Oregon

Tumalo Falls

Tumalo Falls

Tumalo Falls is a spectacular waterfall located in Central Oregon just outside of Bend.  The beautiful thing about this this waterfall is anyone can experience it. You see you can drive right up to it. If you park your car and walk the less than 100 yards you can see it in all it’s beauty from a viewing area. For those that want more you can continue up the path up to the top of the falls. From there the path goes on for a few miles as it follows the creek and has many [Read more…]

Best of Bend, OR in the Fall

Fall hikes in Bend, OR

Fall hikes in Bend, OR

With a town like Bend, Oregon the peak times are in the summer, with all the water sports, lakes, fishing, hiking and the list goes on. And in the winter, with the skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and anything else you can think of.  The falls seems to be the “off season” if you will. But don’t let that keep from enjoying this great town. We got to experience Bend with all it’s outdoor splendor without having to share with a lot of other people. The restaurants that are usually packed, were just quite full. The hiking trails that are ever so popular, had a crowd, but parking spots were easy to find. The the breweries pour beer all year long and that’s really all that matters, right? And you can follow the Bend Ale Trail to all 14 breweries.

Let’s get the food out of the way, since you all know we love to eat, but don’t worry I won’t skip the hiking. I had done my research ahead of time and even asked [Read more…]

Where to Eat in San Antonio

The drinks outside of downtown are WAY better. Like this moonshine cocktail

The drinks outside of downtown are WAY better. Like this moonshine cocktail

This post is for all of you that love great food. Our favorite part of traveling is experiencing the food in other places.  We stumbled upon so many great places that I had to create a post with all the food we indulged in. Not just that, but Texas has a great array of beer. I do love my beer and this Portland girl is not used to so many choices in other cities besides my own.

I have another post, Not Your Typical San Antonio Travel Tips. In that post I shared how you need to get out of downtown for the good food. Even though the umbrellas on the river win you over with their quaintness, know that the food is not that great. But don’t worry, there is great food within walking distance. [Read more…]
